Education on the agenda for the first time at the 19th Asia Oil & Gas Conference
Thursday, May 04, 2017
Raising awareness of the career opportunities and usage of technology in the energy industry among students will - for the first time - form part of proceedings at the forthcoming 19th Asia Oil & Gas Conference (AOGC 2017), taking place in Kuala Lumpur from 7 - 9 May 2017.

A total of 60 local high-school students, aged between 14 and 16 years old, will take part in two residential workshops and a competition. The first workshop which took place from 10 – 12 March 2017 focused on robotics, taking the real-life example of Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicles (ROVs) and covering coding, sensors, components and assembly.

More recently, the students participated in an ROV competition on 29 April 2017 at the Marina Putrajaya, where they applied what they learnt from the first workshop through fabrication of their ideas, conducting product testing and putting the final version of the ROVs to test.

The second workshop gave the students time to prepare for their final pitch and project showcase during AOGC 2017. Major Dr Faiz Khaleed, the 2nd Malaysian astronaut, will be one of the speakers on 8 May at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre for a Youth Icon engagement session with the students, and on the same day, the winner of the ROV competition will be announced.

The student programme aligns with Malaysia’s long-term vision to promote STEAM education and encourage students to pursue careers in STEAM-related industries, and will also equip students with both hard and soft skills which will come in handy in their future careers, such as creativity and critical thinking.

The student programme at AOGC 2017 is in collaboration with PETROSAINS, supported by the Ministry of Education and with generous sponsorship from PETRONAS, ExxonMobil and Repsol.

AOGC 2017 attendees will also have the opportunity to hear from global energy industry leaders in the two-day conference, on the unparalleled challenges faced by the industry. Conference sessions will touch on themes such as competition from other fuel sources, disruptive societal and technological changes and the need to innovate faster and collaborate better. In the exhibition meanwhile, local and international exhibitors will be showcasing the latest technologies, products and services.

The event is hosted by PETRONAS and sponsored by Sapura Energy Berhad, Saudi Aramco, Shell, Mitsubishi Corporation, Mubadala Petroleum, Murphy Oil, TechnipFMC and Weststar Aviation Services, among others.
